A z-gradient array for simultaneous multi-slice excitation with a single-band RF pulse.

چکیده
PURPOSE Multi-slice radiofrequency (RF) pulses have higher specific absorption rates, more peak RF power, and longer pulse durations than single-slice RF pulses. Gradient field design techniques using a z-gradient array are investigated for exciting multiple slices with a single-band RF pulse. THEORY AND METHODS Two different field design methods are formulated to solve for the required current values of the gradient array elements for the given slice locations. The method requirements are specified, optimization problems are formulated for the minimum current norm and an analytical solution is provided. A 9-channel z-gradient coil array driven by independent, custom-designed gradient amplifiers is used to validate the theory. RESULTS Performance measures such as normalized slice thickness error, gradient strength per unit norm current, power dissipation, and maximum amplitude of the magnetic field are provided for various slice locations and numbers of slices. Two and 3 slices are excited by a single-band RF pulse in simulations and phantom experiments. CONCLUSION The possibility of multi-slice excitation with a single-band RF pulse using a z-gradient array is validated in simulations and phantom experiments. Simultaneous multi-slice excitation by parallel transmission using a dual-row pTX head array
Introduction Simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) imaging with receiver arrays allows for greatly accelerated 2D single-shot acquisitions with BOLD or diffusionweighted EPI (1-4), and spirals (5). The commonly used SMS excitation methods require specially designed multi-band (MB) (1,2) or PINS RF pulses (6) to excite N slices. In this abstract we explore the use of parallel transmission (pTX) for SMS...
متن کاملEfficient high-resolution RF pulse design applied to simultaneous multi-slice excitation.
RF pulse design via optimal control is typically based on gradient and quasi-Newton approaches and therefore suffers from slow convergence. We present a flexible and highly efficient method that uses exact second-order information within a globally convergent trust-region CG-Newton method to yield an improved convergence rate. The approach is applied to the design of RF pulses for single- and s...

Introduction: Simultaneous MultiSlice (SMS) MR imaging (1) using MultiBand (MB) RF pulses is becoming increasingly popular in the neuroimaging community (2-4). Recently, there has been an interest in utilizing multielement RF arrays in combination with multichannel (pTx) MB pulse design to reduce transmit B1 (B1+) inhomogeneity and SAR (5,6) for SMS/MB imaging. Meanwhile, it has been shown that...
متن کاملR2/R2* estimation errors in combined gradient- and spin-echo EPI sequences due to slice-profile differences between RF pulses
Introduction There is increased interest in a combined acquisition of gradient-echo (GE) and spin-echo (SE) signals for applications in DSC-PWI and fMRI. One of the main reasons is the different sensitivity of GEs and SEs to different compartments of the underlying microvasculature. While GEs are sensitive to both static and dynamic dephasing of spins, SEs are sensitive to dynamic spin dephasin...
متن کاملMultiband RF Excitation for Accelerating Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Presence of Metal
Target Audience: Researchers interested in MR methods for imaging near metallic implants. Purpose: Recent 3D multispectral imaging (MSI) techniques have dramatically reduced off-resonance artifacts near metal by acquiring multiple 3D-FSE acquisitions at different RF offsets and summing over all RF bins. In-plane distortion, however, remains a problem in areas with extreme local B0 gradients due...
